    The Department of Environmental Sciences at Western Washington University is inviting applications for a 9-month Visiting Assistant Professor from September 16, 2023, through June 15, 2024. We seek an environmental toxicologist with demonstrated ability to teach a range of undergraduate courses. The successful candidate will also be expected to fulfill teaching and mentoring responsibilities in ways that provide equitable and inclusive learning environments for all students. The applicant would be expected to teach Introduction to Environmental Toxicology, Aquatic Toxicology, Toxicology I Lab, Toxicology II Lecture, and Risk Assessment. The expected teaching load is 5 courses a year on a 10-week quarter system (i.e., teaching 1 course in the first quarter and two courses in the second and third quarter). Additional duties will include advising students on course choices, mentoring undergraduate thesis projects, helping with the Toxicology and Societies Speaker series, and other alumni and student community building activities.

About the Position

Teach WWU education sections for Compass to Campus courses C2C 201- WWU Youth Mentoring I; C2C 202- WWU Youth Mentoring II; or C2C 203- Youth Mentoring Toward Social Justice. Attend weekly program meetings.

The Compass 2 Campus program is a mentoring program with a mission to increase access to higher education for students in Whatcom and Skagit counties who have been historically excluded from higher education by providing low-income and Black, Indigenous, and students of color with trained college student mentors.

Position responsibilities include:

  • Work with the Compass 2 Campus Executive Director to recruit college students to serve as mentors and deliver program defined mentoring curriculum.
  • Have involvement in preparing for the yearly campus 5th grade tour and fundraising events.
  • Teach WWU education sections for courses C2C 201, C2C 202-WWU Youth Mentoring I - WWU Youth Mentoring II or C2C 203 Youth Mentoring Toward Social Justice.
Required Qualifications
  • MA, MEd, or MIT in education
  • Teaching experience in both P-12 schools and higher education (community, technical college or university)
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse, underrepresented populations (students and staff) and proven understanding of methods of multi-cultural education
