Position Details:

Summary of Duties:

Under general supervision, performs routine laboratory procedures and other laboratory work in the Sample Receiving section of the Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (WADDL) to support laboratory operations. Conducts simple and qualitative laboratory work, triages, examines, evaluates, prepares, and routes samples for testing, enters data into Laboratory Information Management System, operate and maintain laboratory equipment. Interacts with WADDL clients, faculty, residents and lab personnel, providing exceptional customer service. Familiarity with basic laboratory practices, equipment, and aseptic techniques is essential. Eligibility and understanding of BSL-2 laboratory safety guidelines and work environment is required. Must have a valid driver’s license.


Required Qualifications:

  • Completion of an approved course for laboratory assistants OR Two years of chemical, or clinical or public health laboratory experience. Training in medical technology or education in college with courses in laboratory sciences may be substituted, year for year, for experience.

  • Physical eligibility required for working in a BioSafety Lab-2 (BSL-2) environment. See the following link for more information: https://www.cdc.gov/training/QuickLearns/biosafety/

  • Ability to rotate Saturdays and holidays as scheduled.

  • Must have, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver’s license and meet requirements in accordance with SPPM 7.10 and departmental driving standards.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience using COFL or similar laboratory information management or electronic medical record system.

  • Experience handling biological specimens.

  • Exceptional data entry skills, demonstrating speed and accuracy.

  • Experience in a medical, healthcare, and/or veterinary laboratory setting.

  • Experience providing exceptional customer service.

  • Experience/Familiarity with Hand-Off Communication Standards.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to respond constructively to stressful situations and problems.

Monthly Salary:

$3,811 to $5,117 | Range 44 (Steps A-M) | Successful candidates typically begin at the beginning of the salary range and receive scheduled salary increment increases in accordance with WAC 357-28.
