Make an impact: In the Cook role you will be responsible for food preparation and portion sizing of meals and snacks for the Ys early learning centers following federal and state guidelines along with maintaining a clean and sanitized workspace.

This position is for you, if you can:

  • Prepare breakfast, lunch and snack for children daily based on standard meal plan created with the support of the Site Director and/or Program Supervisor.
  • Cooks and serves food at the correct temperature for food safety. Maintains accurate temperature logs.
  • Maintains kitchen in a safe, sanitary condition (including storage of food, food preparation areas, and service of food) at all times, adhering to USDA, licensing and food safety standards.
  • Develop an inventory system to know which foods need to be purchased.
  • Order and purchase food items to support approved menu.
  • Receives orders and verifies delivery accuracy.
  • Evaluates menu, for children’s likes, dislikes, and appropriateness of cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Maintains files of menus and receipts in organized manner, develops recipe book and label collection per USDA regulations.
  • Prepares food in a timely manner per schedule and ensure correct portion sizes meet optimal child development meal requirements.
  • Responsible for meal counts being taken at point of service or assigning staff responsibility.
  • Monitors classroom staff to ensure that all requirements of family meal style program standards are met.
  • Attends cook and site staff meetings as required.
  • Attends required USDA, DCYF and YMCA trainings to stay current with information and program requirements.
  • Provides backup or assistance to the center fulfilling the role of assistant teacher when needed.

Qualifications & Benefits

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum 18 years old and have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Child development knowledge and experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community
  • Highly developed organization and prioritization skills and dedication to completing tasks in a timely manner.

Childcare Education, Background Checks, and other trainings are required and supported by the YMCA after you are hired!
