NOTE: This position services Howard Miller Steelhead Park and other east county parks within Skagit County.
Maintains parks grounds and county facility grounds in safe, attractive and usable condition. Performs maintenance and construction tasks necessary for the upkeep and repair of facilities, grounds and equipment. Responsible for: the collection of fees, record keeping, and enforcement of park regulations. Assists other County departments in providing service to the public.- Salary upon hire is step 1 through 3 ($26.60/hr. - $28.52/hr.) dependent upon qualifications.
- Progressive increases are based upon years of service with Skagit County, up to 8 total steps. Top step $33.85/hr.). The Park Maintenance Worker I (East County) is Range 11 of the Teamsters (DC/CH/Parks) union salary schedule.
Essential Functions
Maintains park grounds and county facility grounds, including mowing, weed eating, pruning, removing garbage and litter, raking, aerating and fertilizing. Prepares facilities for activities such as ball games, tournaments, special events or County Fair. Weekend and evening shifts shall periodically be required. Performs regular safety checks on facilities and equipment.
Renovates turf, landscaping, athletic fields, lawns, flowerbeds, trails, beaches, playgrounds, picnic and other areas.
Repairs park facilities, such as steps, ramps, docks, shelters, barbecues, picnic and campsites, restrooms, and other park facilities.
Operates, services and maintains equipment, including tractors, mowers, forklift, chainsaw, etc.
Applies herbicide and pesticide sprays to control weeds and brush. The work will be done as per State and Federal regulations, as well as County policy.
Makes safety checks, keeps records, and reports to Park Lead on items needing repair or replacement.
Leads other park workers, including jail crew, part-time, seasonal, community service workers and volunteers.
Interfaces with the public in a positive way by answering questions, providing information and controlling facility use. Customer Service is a primary mission and all employees must work towards ensuring the public has a positive experience in our County owned parks and facilities.
Supervisory: As a lead this position is responsible for managing the daily work of employees but does not have authority for evaluation, discipline, hiring and firing of those employees.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
Attends staff meetings, professional growth conferences and workshops.
May be required to work weekends, holidays and evenings.

- Between three and five years of progressively responsible experience is required. At least two years of experience in grounds maintenance or turf care, or like experience. At least two years of experience in building trades where individual has gained a good background in the application of electrical, plumbing, masonry and carpentry skills, and/or similar equivalent.
Requires knowledge of:- Turf care.
- Facility construction methods and carpentry.
- Electrical and plumbing.
- Pesticide and herbicide application.
- Safety skills to avoid injuries to self or the public while working.
- Use hand and garden tools.
- Use power shop tools and grounds equipment.
- Estimate for supply and materials needs, utilize mathematics for various carpentry projects
- Multi-task and problem solve
- Lead a variety of crews and individuals in grounds work, and maintain a productive work relationship.
- Work without direct supervision.
- Communicate effectively with co-workers and the public.
- Operate mobile equipment, including tractor with attachments, riding lawn mower, and turf maintenance equipment.
- Operate vehicles and trucks, including trailer-towing.
- Operate Tractors and attachments.
Valid Washington State driver's license
Class B CDL endorsement with air brakes preferred but not required.
Pesticides applicator's license required. If applicant does not have the license, it must be obtained within one year of hire date.
Valid First Aid and CPR certificates.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The employee will work in a variety of surroundings. Work is performed primarily outdoors, with exposure to adverse weather conditions. The employees work week will fluctuate and may include weekends and evenings, as necessary.
Must have the ability to lift heavy objects up to 60 pounds, pull, push, bend, stoop, walk, climb, crawl and/or stand for extended periods of time. Requires good motor coordination, manual and finger dexterity.
Hazards:
Working with noisy power tools and equipment. Some exposure to materials including but not limited to, pesticides, herbicides or fertilizer. Supplemental Information
