Summary

This position maintains the physical security of the facility and the health and welfare of all juvenile detainees. Addresses the physical needs of detainees which may include meal preparation and the distribution of equipment and hygiene supplies. Maintains the cleanliness of the facility.

- Salary upon hire is $28.23 to $30.23 per hour (step 1 through 3) depending upon qualifications.


- Progressive increases are based upon years of service with Skagit County, up to step 8 (top step is $35.91/hr.). The Juvenile Corrections Officer is Range 13 of the Teamsters Union (JDO) salary schedule.



Essential Functions

Summary:

The person in this position maintains the physical security of the facility and the health and welfare of all juvenile detainees. They also address the physical needs of detainees which may include meal preparation and the distribution of equipment and hygiene supplies. They also maintain the cleanliness of the facility.

Essential Functions:

Processes all admissions to Detention, which includes obtaining legal screening criteria, property inventory, medical/mental health screening, frisk and/or strip searches, fingerprinting and photographing.

Maintains security within the facility.

Monitors all detainees.

Attends to the physical and emotional needs of all detainees.

Implements the Detention behavioral point/level system.

Ensures the serving of one meal per shift and maintains the cleanliness of the facility.

Answers, screens and directs phone contacts.

Transports detainees as required (Court, doctor's appointments, other institutions, etc.)

Maintains accurate records, including a daily log and individual detainee files.

Processes all releases from Detention.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

Ordering, stocking and inventorying supplies.

Food services duties which may include cooking and baking.

Be available for flexible scheduling as facility needs dictate.

Participate in special training in the areas of suicide prevention, defense tactics and emergency procedures.

Provide supervision and oversight for facility programs, volunteers and visitors and control for contraband.

May be tasked with performing related duties. Related duties as required are duties that may not be specifically listed in the position description, but are within the general occupational series and responsibility level typically associated with the employee’s classification of work.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or G.E.D.

Will be required to attend the Juvenile Services Academy (80 hours) as a condition of continuing employment. Academy requires physical ability pre-test components including: 1.5 mile run in 18 minutes 17 seconds, 10 push ups in 1 minute, 12 sit ups. (WAC 139.10.212)

REQUIRES KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Practices and procedures of the Juvenile Justice system and related methods.

  • Requirements for effective assessment, treatment, referral, care, and custody of juveniles.
  • Regulations and requirements of local, State and federal programs addressing Juvenile Justice issues.
  • Youth intervention and prevention programming and practices.

REQUIRES THE ABILITY TO:

  • Physical required to restrain juveniles as necessary.
  • Work independently.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Use various office computer systems.
  • Use custody techniques and devices including: fingerprinting, handcuffs, leg, torso, and full body restraint equipment.

LICENSES and/or CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Washington State driver's license

  • Food Handlers Card

  • CPR and First Aid certification.

Supplemental Information

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed primarily indoors. Occasional exposure to hostile youth in Detention.

Physical Requirements:

Works on feet most of the day and may lift up to 50 pounds. Excellent physical health. Successful completion of physical ability test is required for admission to the Washington State Justice Training Commission’s Juvenile Security Academy. Successful completion of the Juvenile Security Worker’s Academy is required as a condition of continued employment.
