Position Overview:
The Staff Accountant will play a critical role in ensuring the integrity and accuracy of the Port's financial operations. This position is responsible for preparing financial statements, conducting thorough account and bank reconciliations, and supporting the preparation of audit and tax documentation. The Staff Accountant will also contribute to a broad range of accounting functions including accounts payable and receivable, payroll-related journal entries, tax filings, and onboarding support. This position reports directly to the CFO, partners with another Staff Accountant, and collaborates across the organization with operations, grants, and leasing teams to support accurate, timely, and compliant financial reporting. The role requires strong technical skills, adaptability, and an ability to support process improvement initiatives within a public sector context.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Implement the Port’s Promise, Mission, and Vision. Exhibit the Port’s values, behavioral and leadership expectations including truthfulness, integrity, and teamwork.
  • Prepare accurate and timely financial statements and supporting schedules.
  • Perform monthly account and bank reconciliations and investigate discrepancies.
  • Contribute to full-cycle accounts payable and accounts receivable processing.
  • Record payroll-related journal entries and manage associated vendor payments, including HSA contributions.
  • Support employee onboarding tasks related to finance and accounting.
  • File quarterly leasehold taxes and monthly state excise taxes.
  • Assist with the preparation of documentation for annual audits and tax reporting (e.g., 1099s).
  • Conduct internal audits and support compliance with State Auditor’s Office standards.
  • Identify, propose, and implement improvements to accounting procedures and internal controls.
  • Collaborate effectively with another Staff Accountant and cross-functional teams including contract and grant management, marina operations, real estate, and leasing.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience.
  • Strong understanding and practical experience with accrual-based accounting is required.
  • Experience in private enterprise accounting is highly desirable; public sector experience is a plus but not required.
  • Knowledge of GAAP and GASB accounting standards.
  • Experience with Caselle or similar fund accounting software is beneficial.
  • Strong Excel skills and familiarity with financial reporting tools.
  • Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving and organizational abilities.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills.

Work Environment:

  • On-site role based at the Port of Skagit administrative offices.
  • Standard weekday schedule with additional hours as needed during peak periods.
