BASIC JOB PURPOSE / SUMMARY:

Under direct and general supervision, the Maintenance Tech I performs a variety of skilled, semi-skilled, regular, and recurring tasks in facilities, landscape, and general maintenance support to marina, airport, and business park operations involving Port buildings and grounds.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

All Areas

  1. Implement the Port’s Promise, Mission, and Vision. Exhibit the Port’s values, behavioral and leadership expectations including truthfulness, integrity, and teamwork.
  2. Demonstrate workplace safety: follow all safety rules and guidelines, lead by example, and encourage safety practices among colleagues. Assist in maintaining and enforcing the Port’s safety program.
  3. Conduct daily rounds to inspect facilities and routine preventative maintenance inspections. Report on equipment status and any maintenance needs to supervisors.
  4. Maintain facility cleanliness, including trash removal, restroom cleaning, and restocking supplies.
  5. Perform basic grounds work, such as pressure washing, lawn care, and debris removal.
  6. Keep accurate records of maintenance activities, including inspections, pesticide applications, and work orders.
  7. Provide spill response in accordance with HAZWOPER training and ICS first response protocols during working hours.
  8. Respond to after-hours and snow day callouts as needed.
  9. Perform other duties, responsibilities, and special projects as assigned.

Airport and Business Park

  1. Perform basic maintenance on trails, HVAC systems, and concrete.
  2. Assist senior Maintenance Technicians with complex building and grounds tasks, including plumbing, carpentry, electrical work, and heavy equipment operation.
  3. Support customer or tenant maintenance requests under the guidance of senior Maintenance Technicians, maintaining professionalism and high customer service standards.

Marina

  1. Conduct basic checks and maintenance on docks and tanks, ensuring proper disposal of oil and hazardous waste.
  2. Assist senior Maintenance Technicians with more complex marina tasks, including dock repairs and tank inspections.
  3. Support the Harbormaster with power readings as needed.

Swift Center

  1. Perform basic maintenance on boiler systems, air handlers, and exhaust fans.
  2. Assist senior Maintenance Technicians with complex repairs and upkeep of historic buildings.
  3. Ensure privacy protection for youth residing on the premises.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Some work will be performed sitting at a desk operating a computer and other related office equipment. This position requires you to carry a cell phone and wear a uniform, including safety toed boots. Work performed outdoors may need to be done in all weather conditions and require walking and/or standing for long periods of time on hard, uneven, surfaces and often in wet and/or muddy environments. While working indoors, typically the noise level in the work environment is moderate. While working outdoors, the noise level may increase from moderate to high. Exposure to loud noises, both indoors and outdoors is due to industrial, aviation, marine, maintenance, and repair activities. The work environment could include the use and handling of chemical substances and solutions, which could be potentially hazardous if labeled instructions are not adhered to, or mixed/combined improperly.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires the ability to hear, speak, understand, and clearly communicate the spoken English language, and the ability to read, write, and understand directions in English. Applicants must have the dexterity and manual skills required to operate the keyboard of a computer terminal, a radio communications device, and the ability to read maps, drawings, and other related project materials. This position requires frequent lifting and/or carrying of items up to 50 pounds. Applicants must have the ability to push, pull, lift, lower, and maneuver items from ground to overhead and from side to side. Must have the physical ability to perform all essential functions of the job.

WORK PERFORMED

Examples of projects include trail bridge construction, stormwater ditch cleaning and repair, runway taxi light installation, noxious weed control, office lighting upgrades, equipment and facility maintenance, building repair, grounds work, trenching, show removal and sweeping.

Type of equipment: motor vehicles, mowers, sprayers, power and hand tools, lifters, telephone and cell phones, specialty equipment for construction, carpentry, plus other basic shop tools and equipment.

TRAINING, EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & RESPONSE TIME REQUIREMENTS

Formal Education: High school graduate or equivalent required. Additional education in maintenance technical courses is desirable.

Work Experience: Minimum of one (1) year in facilities maintenance or similar field. 1-2 years’ general maintenance experience preferred.

Training/Certification/Licenses:

  • Valid Washington state drivers’ license (must be insurable)
  • Basic Environmental Compliance Training Certification, or equivalent (employer sponsored)
  • First Aid and CPR Certification (employer sponsored)
  • Twenty-four (24) hour HAZWOPER Awareness Certification (employer sponsored)
  • ICS First Responder Certification (employer sponsored)

Required Skills:

  • Must be able to operate, maintain and create emails, documents and other programs associated with the position.
  • Microsoft office basic knowledge and experience preferred.
  • Customer Service and clear communication skills are necessary.
  • Must be able to properly operate a wide variety of basic shop tools and equipment

Response Time: Residing within thirty (30) minutes travel time from primary workplace preferred.
