Summary:

This position involves developing and implementing individualized educational programs, which address the educational needs of elementary, secondary, and transition-age students with disabilities or the remediation of social/emotional, educational, and prevocational/vocational skill deficits primarily for students in a transition 18–21-year-old program at Skagit Valley College and to serve as a transition facilitator as our students leave the juvenile justice school and return to their districts.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides direct supervision of Paraeducators, to include scheduling, planning, and initiating strategies for performance, assigning, as well as, directing the work, training, formally reviewing performance and resolving complaints.
  • Develops and implements an appropriate individualized educational program (IEP) for each student, to include educational needs of students with severe behavioral disabilities, social/emotional, and prevocational/vocational skill deficits, specifying appropriate instructional goals and objectives in accordance with the state essential learning goals.
  • Develops appropriate learning plans and working schedules to meet the unique needs of students in an alternative setting, as well as working schedules to teach and meet set goals
  • Collects baseline data relative to student’s social/emotional, educational, and vocational skills utilizing standardized tests, teacher-made tests, behavioral observation procedures, as well as collecting data on student progress at regular
  • Works closely with a building-based, multidisciplinary team, during the assessment, planning, implementation, and transition phases of a student’s program.

  • Develops and maintains an effective records management system which reflects accurate and current data on student Completes and distributes all required reports in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Assists with the de-escalation and physical management of students in crisis according to established program procedures.
  • Communicates on an ongoing basis with resident district staff regarding student progress and works with basic educational staff to facilitate successful inclusion of students into the regular classroom setting.
  • Provides consultation to school district staff to facilitate the successful transition of students to less restrictive placements.
  • Communicates with parents and/or other individuals involved in the care of the student on a regular basis regarding student progress and relevant issues.

Licenses and/or Certifications: Washington State teaching certificate with Special Education endorsement  Current CPR and First Aid certification required, or be willing to obtain.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work is performed in an educational center for special needs students. Travel may be required on occasion. Must be physically capable of performing de-escalation techniques. Lifts and carries a maximum of 40 pounds. Adequate manual and finger dexterity, hearing, speech, and vision are necessary to perform the essential functions of this position.

Hazards: Due to the nature of the population of the school, hazards include but are not limited to exposure to weapons, threats, verbal abuse, hitting, fighting, throwing of objects, etc.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree, Washington State teaching certificate with Special Education endorsement required and a minimum of three-years’ experience working in special education. Additional teacher preparation program is a plus. Fingerprinting, WSP/FBI criminal history background clearance required. Current CPR and First Aid certification required, or willing to obtain. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted which provides the skills, knowledge, and ability to perform the essential functions of the position. NOTE: Holders of standard/continuing teaching certificates (issued prior to 8/31/87) which are non-endorsable, need to include copies of official transcripts highlighting the 24 quarter hours of special education course work.

Employment Conditions and Benefits

186 days per year, 8 hours per day, starting 9/1/2022 for the 2022-23 school year.

Salary Range*

$60,523.51 - $114,083.20

*Skagit County regionalzation compensation equal to 4% of annual salary has been added to rates.
