Job Description: Maintenance/Utility

Responsible to: Supervisor, Maintenance and Operations

Work Year: 260 Days, 8 hours per day

General:

Participate in the work of keeping school buildings and facilities properly maintained and orderly. Instruct and mentor assistants in their responsibilities and work requirements. Work independently and provide advice and recommendations concerning maintenance of District properties.

Minimum Qualification:
Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent
Current Washington State Driver’s License
One year work experience in related fields of job responsibilities as outlined.
Computer skills relevant to District’s network use (e-mail, work orders, etc).
Ability to obtain valid CPR and First Aid card.
Ability to maintain regular daily attendance.

Position Responsibilities:
Fabricate and weld equipment for District needs.
Repair and tune gas-powered equipment as needed.
Prepare and implement a maintenance schedule for all lawn equipment.
Conduct/install preventative maintenance on heating/mechanical equipment.
Replace or install existing electrical devices/circuits as required.
Measure windows and repair/replace as necessary.
Substitute into other maintenance positions as required.
Install and maintain playground equipment.
Form, pour and finish concrete.
Repair faucets, valves, leaking pipes, clogged drains and other minor plumbing issues. Install new plumbing where necessary or required in emergency situations.
Repair furniture, cabinets, cabinet locks, benches, bleachers and various items of building hardware.
Install/repair drywall as necessary.
Mow lawns; rake and trim grass; trim shrubs as required.
Remove refuse from grounds.
Transport refuse to dump.
Clean gutters, roofs, and drains.
Operate a variety of hand and power tools; operate District motor vehicles.
Assist the maintenance department in completing other maintenance tasks.
Assist in custodial work as necessary or required.
Perform such other duties as, from time to time, may be assigned.

In-Service Training Responsibilities:
Instruct/mentor assistants as necessary in their responsibilities and work requirements.

Education and/or Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent; work experience in related fields of job responsibilities.

Language Skills:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to staff, students and other employees.

Communication:
Ability to communicate with co-workers, supervisors, students, other District staff and the community through oral and written correspondence.

Mathematical Skills:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Decision Making/Reasoning Ability:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

Other Skills and Abilities:
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, students, District staff and the community. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk; use hands to figure, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; and talk or hear. The employee frequently must squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools and climbs onto ladders. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as a tool box. Occasionally the employee will lift and/or move up to 90 lbs such as piping and pool valves. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables, scaffolds, and air compressors. Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and will occasionally work outdoors. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. The employee may occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, and sprays and non-household dust. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. Frequently the employee will work alone and occasionally will work irregular or extended hours.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and occasionally, the employee will work in a loud area.
