Title: Laboratory Phlebotomist Lead

Location: FCN Laboratory Services

City: Bellingham, WA

Position: Full-Time, Monday-Friday, occasional evening/weekend, variable shifts, Non-Exempt (hourly)

Compensation: The full wage scale is $19.75 - $27.05 per hour. We also offer a $3.00 per hour shift differential for eligible evening and weekend hours. Placement within the wage range is determined by the candidate’s relevant experience.

Bonus Programs: Employees are eligible annually to participate in discretionary bonus programs, as determined by FCN, which include the Years-of-Service bonus program, the Quality Performance bonus program, and the Performance Recognition bonus program.

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Lab Services Manager and Lab Services Supervisor, this position is responsible for overseeing the daily workflow of phlebotomists in all locations to meet high quality standards of patient care and regulatory requirements and in a manner that promotes and supports the Core Values of the Family Care Network. This position is responsible for working in draw stations as well as administrative time for overseeing the technical activities of the phlebotomists.

Essential Job Functions

  • Provide leadership to staff as assigned by supervisor and/or manager.

  • Schedule staff as directed by supervisor and/or manager.

  • Mentor staff as needed to achieve competency/training.

  • Provide quality patient care.

  • Demonstrate clinical excellence.

  • Research and investigate laboratory-related problems and follow through with solutions.

  • Communicate with supervisor and/or manager regarding violation of policy, laws, rules, or scope.

  • Assist with completion of new hire training (competency/training form).

  • Assist with ensuring demonstration and observation of lab specific operational procedures (within 90-day period).

  • Complete and report on special assignments as needed.

  • Provide coverage for various lab shifts when necessary.

  • Review and approve timecards as directed by manager.

  • Establish and maintain courteous and effective interactions with colleagues and patients.

  • Demonstrate a commitment toward meeting and exceeding the needs of our internal and external customers.

  • Participate in appropriate departmental and organizational meetings and committees as defined by supervisor and/or manager.

  • Participate in departmental and/or interdepartmental quality improvement activities.

  • Perform delegated functions using established procedures, policies, guidelines, and standards per FCN standards and Washington State Dept. of Health scope of practice guidelines.

  • Comply with all FCN policies and procedures.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Proven phlebotomy competence

  • Medical Terminology

  • Regulatory requirements applicable to the assigned function.

  • Policies, standards, procedures, tools and protocols applicable to the FCN laboratory function.

  • Advanced computer skills including Microsoft Windows OS, Microsoft.

  • Strong working knowledge of Outlook, data entry, simultaneous use of multiple computer systems.

  • Manual dexterity and acuity necessary to prepare, screen and process specimens

  • Ability to concentrate for long periods, utilize good judgement, work accurately under pressure and handle stress to meet deadlines.

  • Ability to separate plasma and operate laboratory centrifuges

  • Proven ability to organize and prioritize workload.

  • Strong detail-orientation

  • Ability to problem solve/troubleshoot issues.

  • Strong customer service both in person and via telephone.

  • Effective verbal, written and electronic communication with physicians, APPs, staff and patients.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as required by the duties of the position

  • Perform the physical/functional responsibilities of the position

  • Our PTO and EIB benefits begin accruing from the first day of employment and employees are eligible to take paid time off after 60 days of employment. An employee accrues PTO at a rate based upon the number of months of service at FCN. A new full-time employee generally accrues 18 days per year. EIB accrues based upon the number of paid hours excluding overtime, with a full-time employee accruing a maximum of 48 hours per year. Benefit eligibility is determined based on the full or part-time status of the position. Employees who are ineligible for FCN’s PTO/EIB programs accrue Paid Sick Leave per Washington State law.

Our 401k retirement plan is designed to support you in preparing for retirement planning and include individualized financial planning guidance. Eligibility for the FCN Retirement Plan programs is determined based upon years of service and required payroll hours.

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Three (3) years clinical or reference laboratory experience with progressive increase in responsibilities preferred.

  • Completion of formal Phlebotomist training program

  • Current certification as a MA-P with the WA State Dept. of Health.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to: climb stairs; balance, stoop, kneel, crouch. Employee is regularly required to: stand; walk and sit for long periods of time; use hand to finger coordination, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, the ability to adjust and focus and discern colors.

Immunization Requirements:

All employees at Family Care Network (FCN) are expected to meet and maintain required immunizations as a contingency of employment. The immunization requirements are as follows: Influenza (annually), Tdap (after the age of 19), MMR, Varicella or a verified history of chicken pox disease, Two-step TST or IGRA (within the last 12 months), COVID-19 vaccine completed series and any additional immunizations determined necessary for the protection of staff and patients. Hepatitis B is also required for employees in positions with a high risk of blood borne pathogen exposure, which includes the following: Providers, RNs, LPNs, MA-Cs, PSRs at all Urgent Care Locations, and all-laboratory staff. The Hepatitis B vaccine is strongly recommended for all other employees. FCN will cover the cost of required immunizations for any FCN employee. All employee immunizations will be administered by FCN staff except for the COVID-19 vaccine. The COVID-19 vaccine can be administered at a participating pharmacy or other healthcare location. Note: A medical or religious vaccine exemption/reasonable accommodation will be considered by submitting a FCN Exemption form for review and evaluation by the Chief Medical Officer.
