The ELA Instructor teaches English to adult learners, whose first language is not English, to facilitate their community engagement and career goals. Instructs in a classroom setting. This position will be a temporary position full time or part time beginning in early September 2024 and ending in June 2025.

JOB DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

1. Instruct adults in English Language Acquisition (ELA) in a classroom setting.

2. Oversee ELA curriculum and activities development for the volunteers at the site.

3. Prepare lesson plans according to best practices in adult education:

  • Implement student goal-setting activities;
  • Contextualize classes to students’ subject area of interest, in addition to the textbook;
  • Encourage development of critical thinking;
  • Use College and Career Readiness Standards as learning basis;
  • Encourage student self-efficacy and responsibility;
  • Engage students in technology-based learning.

4. Assess student learning levels and assist in pre/post state board testing.

5. Record student attendance and classroom activities on appropriate logs in the site binder.

6. Act as liaison for agency and classroom facility providers; oversee classroom schedules.

7. Coordinate volunteer instructors, meet regularly with staff, and discuss lesson plans and program needs.

8. Attend State Board of Community & Technical Colleges training as appropriate.

9. Maintain the site binder for site, including attendance sheets, teaching logs, incident reports, etc.).

10. Participate in agency trainings and meetings as required.

11. Other related duties as assigned by management.

QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE:

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor Degree in Education or related field required; Master Degree preferred.
  • 3-years of instructional experience (tutoring, teaching and/or specialized training in reading or ELA instruction, adult basic education, or family literacy).
  • Experience working with volunteer coordination preferable.

Or a combination of education and experience providing the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work.

License(s) & Certification(s)

  • Must have valid driver license and auto liability insurance if personal vehicle is used for work-related travel.
  • TESOL /TEFL Certificate preferred.

Skills & Abilities

  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred; additional languages helpful.
  • Ability to work independently, and as a team member; self-motivated.
  • Expertise dealing with people, building relationships with staff, co-workers, volunteers, clients and community partners.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills.
  • Experience in public speaking and facilitation essential.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite applications, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Publisher and Outlook programs.
  • Must have strong and effective communication skills (oral and written).
  • Working knowledge of standard office procedures and technologies (phone, computer, printer, photocopier, scanner, fax machine, projector, video camera and compact disc player).
  • Demonstrated ability to work harmoniously with people from varied cultural, socioeconomic, educational and experiential backgrounds.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Starting Pay Range between $21.07 - $23.26 per hour (DOE)
