JOB TITLE: Recreation Lead – Rec On-the Go Program DEPARTMENT: Parks and Enrichment Services CLASSIFICATION: Non-Represented SALARY: $18.01 to $20.28 per hour CLOSING DATE: This position is open until filled with a first review date of April 8, 2022

JOB SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Recreation Coordinator, the Recreation Lead provides direct leadership for program participants and serves as the on-site staff person for the Rec On-the-Go Program or other assigned program. Oversee the proper execution of the program(s) and use of the facility/field and equipment. This position works approximately 24-30 hours per week, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

EXAMPLES OF FUNCTIONS: Essential functions may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Plan, lead, and supervise fun activities and learning opportunities for a variety of activities to include but not limited to: sports, games, crafts, fitness, environmental, and STEM, for youth 3-13 years of age in an outdoor setting.
  2. Set up and take down equipment (table, chairs, canopy, game and sports gear), implement, supervise and actively participate in activities.
  3. Supervise Recreation Aides and youth volunteers working within the program.
  4. Inspect activity areas and related equipment, make written reports of damage, and recommend maintenance and repair as needed.
  5. Enforce safety rules and regulations of the program and the park.
  6. Provide minor first aid to recreation program participants as appropriate.
  7. Build and maintain positive working relationships with other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
  8. Ensure recreation program(s) operate in accordance with general department philosophy, objectives, and guidelines.
  9. Keep accurate program records and write periodic reports.
  10. Update Recreation Coordinator on status of program, participant concerns and equipment.
  11. Ensure that facilities/fields are utilized properly and left in good condition.
  12. Assist with other programs or special events as assigned which may include weekends and evenings.
  13. Must be able to react quickly and make sound decisions in emergency situations.
  14. Ability to drive City approved vehicles.
  15. Effectively communicate with parents, participants, and community members.
  16. Monitor participants’ behavior to assure a positive and safe program environment.
  17. Perform custodial and/or light maintenance duties.
  18. Other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines: • High School diploma or GED. • Must have at least two (2) years’ experience working with a Parks and Recreation Department or related work experience. • Must have (or be able to obtain when hired) current First Aid/CPR and AED certification. • Bilingual (English/Spanish) encouraged. • Must be able to successfully pass a background check. License and Certification Requirements: • Valid Washington State Driver’s License

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of: • Operational characteristics of recreational sports, kids’ games, crafts, and field use. • Principles and practices of standard safety precautions.

Skills in: • Consistently provide high quality customer service. • Problem solving and conflict and dispute resolution, as applicable. • Explaining and enforcing rules, regulations, procedures, and program objectives.

Ability to:

• Positively influence, engage and motivate participants, staff and volunteers. • Engage in active play with program participants. • Communicate effectively orally and in writing. • Respectfully communicate with parents, co-workers, and participants. • Exercise courtesy and tact in dealing with participants and parents. • Operate City approved vehicles. • Work well with other employees and the public. • Maintain a professional appearance.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS: While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, bend, use hands to handle or feel objects, tools or controls and talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb or crawl. The employee must be able to lift up to 25 pounds on a frequent basis and lift/move up to 35 pounds on an occasional basis with assistance. This position works primarily outdoors and may be subject to inclement weather.
